My Top 12 Staycations in Scotland

As we are getting closer to a sense of normality, you might be starting to plan some staycations nearer to home. I’m looking forward to getting out and exploring this beautiful country again, and have put together a guide to inspire you to get out and explore too.

Whether you have your sights set on the Highlands, or you’re planning a city break, here are my top 12 staycation venues in Scotland.

Harlosh Black h

Set on the west coast of the Isle of Skye, Black h by Harlosh is a minimalist hideaway with unparalleled views of Loch Bracadale and the rugged Cuillin Mountains.

Surrounded by open croft, this architectural hideaway for two is a space that’s private, contemporary and luxurious.

Croft 103

Featured in The Times 50 Best Places To Stay in 2019, Croft 103 is a luxury self-catering accommodation on the shores of Loch Eriboll near Durness in Sutherland, Scotland.

These stunning low impact buildings benefit from the very best in traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design.

The cottages are in a very remote part of Sutherland so you can enjoy uninterrupted views of the surrounding landscape. The owners Fiona and Robbie Mackay have created the ultimate escape for those who want to get away from it all.

The Net Store

I’ve been lucky enough to experience The Net Store having visited the holiday home early last year. Completed in 2014, The Net Store is nestled on the shores of the Applecross Peninsula, in a small fishing village called Ardheslaig. It overlooks Loch Beag through large panoramic windows with views to the Outer Hebrides on a clear day.

The holiday home is in an ideal location to watch the sunset and the ever changing views between the mainland and the Hebrides.

The Net Store is currently not on Instagram, but you can find out more about this beautiful holiday home at www.the-net-store.com

Glen Dye Cabins & Cottages

Listed as one of the top 25 cottages in the UK by The Times in 2019, Glen Dye spans 30,000 acres of Aberdeenshire countryside. It hosts a series of cabins and cottages, perfect for those who love to explore the wilderness. Think Swedish wood-fired hot tubs, retro decor, and private gardens, this place has plenty to keep you occupied.

On our visit last year, we were blown away by all the facilities available to guests. As a guest you have full access to the Glen Dye Arms, their very own BYOB pub complete with roaring log fire, ancient bar and record player. You can also use the amazing wood-fired sauna, and enjoy fresh produce from their very own gardens.

The Pavilion at Lamb’s House

A 17th Century building on the outskirts of Edinburgh, The Pavilion at Lamb’s House is the creation of award winning conservation Architect, Nick Groves-Raines and Architect and Painter Kristín Hannesdóttir.

They incorporate contemporary design, while maintaining the traditional features of the building. Having travelled extensively staying in accommodation of every type, the couple have drawn upon their experience to create the perfect place to stay, well equipped to meet the modern traveller’s needs.

The owners live a stone's throw away from the house and like to welcome their guests and can offer information about the surrounding area.

57 Nord

Wake up to views like you’ve never seen before at 57 Nord. 57 Nord nestles at the junction of three ancient sea lochs, with views over the Kintail Mountains and the infamous Eilean Donan Castle. This part of the Highlands is home to famous distilleries and Michelin starred restaurants, with breathtaking hikes and drives all around.

The hideaway itself consists of a luxurious balance of modern Scandanavian, mid-century and Scottish design. 57 Nord is located on the scenic coast of Wester Ross, just two hours by car from Inverness Airport and a 15 minute drive from The Isle of Skye.

Inverlonan

Disconnect from the day-to-day at Inverlonan bothies. These cabins are architecturally designed and offer rough luxury and seclusion. The cabins nestle between ancient oaks overlooking Loch Nell.

Each bothy has a private deck, open fire pit and outdoor wood-fired pizza oven. You'll also have a private eco-toilet and outdoor shower. If you’re feeling adventurous you can also hop into a double kayak, or explore the loch on a paddleboard.

Inverlonan is reached by a spectacular drive through Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park, as well as being six miles from the port town of Oban - the perfect base to explore the Western Isles including Mull, Iona and beyond.

The Black Shed

The Black Shed is an architectural award-winning, self-catering accommodation situated on the west coast of the Isle of Skye, with beautiful views of MacLeod’s Tables (two flat topped hills).

The interior features an open plan living area with a wood burning stove and a plethora of books. Plus, a sofa bed to enjoy a lazy evening (which I would highly recommend) after exploring the Isle.

Kabn Company

This next place is one to watch. Set in a private location, Kabn Company has created a luxury off-grid experience enabling guests to escape the hustle of everyday life and relax in nature.
The decor incorporates Scandinavian minimalism and contemporary design with environmentally sustainable products that have been carefully considered and used throughout.

Kabn Company is not yet open but has an opening offer limited to the first 50 guests. More information can be found on their website, www.kabncompany.com

Airship 002

Have an other-worldly experience at Airship 002. A comfy, cosy and quirky place to stay near Drimnin in the Scottish Highlands. Featured in the Scotsman as possibly Scotland's 'most unusual' stay, AirShip 002 is a contemporary cabin with expansive views over the Sound of Mull, from dragonfly windows.

Although staying at AirShip 002 is awe-inspiring in itself, the natural surroundings are just as exciting. The private four acre site offers the freedom to explore their immediate surroundings, or take dramatic walks through the woodlands and beyond.

Porteous’ Studio

Porteous’ Studio is a simple, architect designed holiday home in Edinburgh. Nestled under the shadow of Edinburgh Castle, the space is the first project by duo Jack and Eilidh, who together form architecture and design studio, @izat.arundell.

The studio is designed as a quiet retreat for two people to rest after a busy day exploring the city. The design of the space includes an open kitchen and living area, a bedroom with double bed and separate shower room, alongside a handful of amenities. As a fan of minimalist interiors, I was delighted to come across this holiday home right on our doorstep.

Venachar Cabins

An hour from Edinburgh and Glasgow, this loch-side setting on a private estate is truly idyllic. Comprising three cabins named Birch, Rowan and Alder, the cabins overlook Ben Ledi and are perfectly situated to start your journey to the Highlands. Perched right on the edge of the water, you can fully enjoy the ever changing landscape.

All cabins have a log burner and guests staying at Birch Cabin have access to a wood-fired hot tub.
